Atoms for Pea
By Dwight D. Eisenhower (excerpt)

Occasional pages of history do record the faces of the ”Great Destroyers” but the whole book of history reveals mankind’s never-ending quest for peace, and mankind’s God-given capacity to build.

It is with the book of history, and not with isolated pages, that the United States will ever wish to be identified. My country wants to be constructive, not destructive. It wants agreement, not wars, among nations. It wants itself to live in freedom, and in the confidence that the people of every other nation enjoy equally the right of choosing their own way of life.

So my country’s purpose is to help us move out of the dark chamber of horrors into the light, to find a way by which the minds of men, the hopes of men, the souls of men every where, can move forward toward peace and happiness and well being.

In this quest, I know that we must not lack patience.

I know that in a world divided, such as our today, salvation cannot be attained by one dramatic act.

I know that many steps will have to be taken over many months before the world can look at itself one day and truly realize that a new climate of mutually peaceful confidence is abroad in the world.

But I know, above all else, that we must start to take these steps—now.

Read the passage. What tone does President Eisenhower use in this speech, and how does the tone affect the purpose of his speech?

A. a playful tone to persuade the world to disregard the isolated instances when the United States used nuclear technology
B. a pacifying tone to convince the audience that the United States will use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and not for destruction
C. a pessimistic tone to indicate that the United States regrets having invented nuclear technology
D. a rational tone to describe the failure of the United States to employ nuclear technology successfully

The "Atoms for Peace" speech was delivered by United States President Dwight Eisenhower to the 470 Plenary Meeting of the United Nations on December 8, 1953.

The other incorrect options are:

Thesaurus: A thesaurus is a book that lists words grouped together according to similarity of meaning (containing synonyms and sometimes antonyms), which is not relevant to finding altitude information.

Dictionary: A dictionary provides definitions for words and is not a source for geographical data such as altitudes.

Read the excerpt from the beginning of Chapter 5 of Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. "What in the world are you going to do now, Jo?" asked Meg one snowy afternoon, as her sister came tramping through the hall, in rubber boots, old sack, and hood, with a broom in one hand and a shovel in the other. "Going out for exercise," answered Jo with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. "I should think two long walks this morning would have been enough! It's cold and dull out, and I advise you to stay warm and dry by the fire, as I do," said Meg with a shiver. "Never take advice! Can't keep still all day, and not being a (psy)cat, I don't like to doze by the fire. I like adventures, and I'm going to find some." Why does Alcott most likely begin the chapter with character dialogue?
to introduce the characters in the story
to set up the problem in the story

The prefix im- in the word impractical gives a clue that this word means

Answers

Final answer:

The prefix im- in the word impractical gives a clue that this word means not practical or not suitable for practical purposes.

Explanation:

The prefix im- in the word impractical gives a clue that this word means not practical or not suitable for practical purposes.

The prefix im- is a negative prefix that is added to words and changes their meaning to the opposite. In this case, the word practical means suitable for practical purposes, so impractical means not suitable for practical purposes.

For example, if someone says that a plan is impractical, they are saying that it is not feasible or realistic to carry out.

Final answer:

The prefix 'im-' suggests negation, making 'impractical' mean not practical. Understanding English prefixes like 'im-' and 'il-' is key to determining the meanings of new words.

Explanation:

The prefix im- in the word impractical suggests a negation or opposition to the root word, which in this case is 'practical'. Therefore, impractical means not practical or not useful in a practical situation. This prefix is commonly used in English to create antonyms of adjectives. For example, the prefix il- functions similarly in the word illogical, indicating something that is not logical or doesn't follow reason. Understanding prefixes can give you clues about the meaning of new words you encounter.
