Which word from the excerpt helps define discourse? Picture/Pages/Sermon/Interested

The word from the excerpt that helps define discourse is “Sermon”. The sermon works here as a type of discourse to be defined and it describes some characteristics of it: it can create interest through verbal “pictures”.

Answer:

Sermon.

Explanation:

Discourse is the act of communication where words and actions are used. It signifies the very act of being in discussion/ debate with others about any topic or issue.

Considering the given passage, the most likely meaning of the word "discourse" can be sermon. This is because the speaker s talking about Tom who attended a church congregation. And in this process, he was referring to the very act of being in communication/ active participation with the rest of the congregating members. So, when the speaker states "he seldom knew anything else about the discourse", he means that Tom hardly knew anything else about the sermon.

Answers

The correct answer to the question is:

The settlers' lack of manners in their treatment of Native Americans

Franklin is talking about how the settlers are looking at the Native Americans when they come to their towns, they look at them openly and rude as the Native "desire to be private". The Native Americans do not wat to feel different and out of place.

Answer:

The settlers' lack of manners in their treatment of Native Americans.

Explanation:

This is the main idea that Franklin tries to convey in this passage. In these lines, Franklin tells us that when Native Americans come into the settlers' towns, they are often made uncomfortable by curious settlers that stare at them and get in their way. Franklin says that, even though the Native Americans are just as curious, they satisfy their curiosity in much more polite and controlled ways.

Read the passage. excerpt from Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy Thomas Hardy's Victorian novel follows Tess, a pure, rural girl, whose path crosses with the d'Urbervilles, an old and wealthy English family. In this scene, Tess and her admirer, Angel, travel through the English countryside. As they drove on, the fragment of an old manor house of Caroline date rose against the sky, and was in due course passed and left behind. "That," he observed, to entertain her, "is an interesting old place—one of the several seats which belonged to an ancient Norman family formerly of great influence in this county, the d'Urbervilles. I never pass one of their residences without thinking of them. There is something very sad in the extinction of a family of renown, even if it was fierce, domineering, feudal renown." "Yes," said Tess. They crept along towards a point in the expanse of shade just at hand at which a feeble light was beginning to assert its presence, a spot where, by day, a fitful white streak of steam at intervals upon the dark green background denoted intermittent moments of contact between their secluded world and modern life. Modern life stretched out its steam feeler to this point three or four times a day, touched the native existences, and quickly withdrew its feeler again, as if what it touched had been uncongenial. They reached the feeble light, which came from the smoky lamp of a little railway station; a poor enough terrestrial star, yet in one sense of more importance to Talbothays Dairy and mankind than the celestial ones to which it stood in such humiliating contrast. The cans of new milk were unladen in the rain, Tess getting a little shelter from a neighbouring holly tree. Then there was the hissing of a train, which drew up almost silently upon the wet rails, and the milk was rapidly swung can by can into the truck. The light of the engine flashed for a second upon Tess Durbeyfield's figure, motionless under the great holly tree. No object could have looked more foreign to the gleaming cranks and wheels than this unsophisticated girl, with the round bare arms, the rainy face and hair, the suspended attitude of a friendly leopard at pause, the print gown of no date or fashion, and the cotton bonnet drooping on her brow. She mounted again beside her lover, with a mute obedience characteristic of impassioned natures at times, and when they had wrapped themselves up over head and ears in the sailcloth again, they plunged back into the now thick night. Tess was so receptive that the few minutes of contact with the whirl of material progress lingered in her thought. "Londoners will drink it at their breakfasts to-morrow, won't they?" she asked. "Strange people that we have never seen." "Yes—I suppose they will. Though not as we send it. When its strength has been lowered, so that it may not get up into their heads." "Noble men and noble women, ambassadors and centurions, ladies and tradeswomen, and babies who have never seen a cow." "Well, yes; perhaps; particularly centurions." "Who don't know anything of us, and where it comes from; or think how we two drove miles across the moor to-night in the rain that it might reach 'em in time?" "We did not drive entirely on account of these precious Londoners; we drove a little on our own—on account of that anxious matter which you will, I am sure, set at rest, dear Tess. Now, permit me to put it in this way. You belong to me already, you know; your heart, I mean. Does it not?" "You know as well as I. O yes—yes!" "Then, if your heart does, why not your hand?" "My only reason was on account of you—on account of a question. I have something to tell you—" "But suppose it to be entirely for my happiness, and my worldly convenience also?" "O yes; if it is for your happiness and worldly convenience. But my life before I came here—I want—" "Well, it is for my convenience as well as my happiness. If I have a very large farm, either English or colonial, you will be invaluable as a wife to me; better than a woman out of the largest mansion in the country. So please—please, dear Tessy, disabuse your mind of the feeling that you will stand in my way."

Answer:

The correct answer to the question: Which revision corrects the sentence error above? is: My friends don´t understand why I love my truck; it is a 1947 Studebaker in pristine condition.

Explanation:

The explanation comes from understanding the function of the second clause, which further expands on the information of the first, and also why it is necessary to use punctuation marks to divide the main sentence, from the clause. Since this is a main claim: "My friends don´t understand why I love my truck", and the clause after it explains why the speaker likes his truck, so that the reader also understands the point, it is necessary to make it clear that the second half of the sentence is an explanatory clause, which adds further information. In order to do this, you must use a semicolon to indicate that the second half of the main sentence wishes to expand information on the first.

Read the passage from Animal Farm.

As Clover looked down the hillside her eyes filled with tears. If she could have spoken her thoughts, it would have been to say that this was not what they had aimed at when they had set themselves years ago to work for the overthrow of the human race. These scenes of terror and slaughter were not what they had looked forward to on that night when old Major first stirred them to rebellion. If she herself had had any picture of the future, it had been of a society of animals set free from hunger and the whip, all equal, each working according to his capacity, the strong protecting the weak, as she had protected the lost brood of ducklings with her foreleg on the night of Major's speech. Instead—she did not know why—they had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere, and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing to shocking crimes. There was no thought of rebellion or disobedience in her mind. She knew that, even as things were, they were far better off than they had been in the days of Jones, and that before all else it was needful to prevent the return of the human beings. Whatever happened she would remain faithful, work hard, carry out the orders that were given to her, and accept the leadership of Napoleon.

Hello there!

1. Symbols, themes, and characters with similar attitudes always exist inside the world of literature and arts. Authors and artists use them to express their feelings or the message that they want to share with the world but in a nicer and deeper way. However, these figures of speech are not easier to catch up at first sight but does not matter how much time passes, there will always have an impact on human lives.

2. Writers, poets and artists do not write these pieces just because they wanted to, they as well want to contribute with something meaningful in the near future of humanity. When the audience understands the pieces they are reading, they interpret the message that the author wanted to share with them.

3. The universal theme that both short stories share is mortality. In The Story of an Hour, the main character Louisa Mallard, the author shared this theme through the death feeling near her husband's almost death. On the other hand, Granny Weatherall in The Jilting of Granny Weatherall, death was the one that showed on her through her agony feelings that death caused  her such as fear of abandonment and loneliness after dying.

4. Both pieces share the symbol of a man's wall-bordering around themselves or near their property. They both wanted to share with the rest of the people but their self-desperation always share them apart. In the poem The Mending Wall, this theme was showing his desperation through distance and tension between men. On the other hand, in the song performed by Pink  Floyd, the theme was symbolized with isolation.

Waverly manages to fulfill the expectations of her mother to master "the art of the invisible force", applying that ancient Chinese popular wisdom in the struggle of forces between them. Waverly's mother wants her children to be able to develop in American society and all she has to offer is her modest wisdom and the strength of her character, which are imposed on the way she dresses and feeds her children, in the form of impelling her to go further away, minimizing those that for her, like the girl she is, are powerful moments that reveal her full potential.

It suddenly becomes clear to Waverly that the mother's efforts to help her children are not enough and then she understands, after her unfortunate escape and the strong words of the discussion with her mother, that she is ready to start applying a subtle strategy until she gets to earn her respect for the passion for chess and in general, to find her own place in the world, which ultimately is always the struggle of children against their parents to play that subtle balance between obedience and the search for their one's own identity.

The clues are in the descriptions of the dress, the origin and meaning of the names of the three children and even in the mother's handling of the language as a broken English.

Answers

“Sons abandon their fathers without emotion.”

To conclude that the prisoners are emotionally numb, you would use keywords/phrases. In the quote above, words such as “abandon” and “without emotion” show that the characters are void, show no remorse as they do not care. They are numb. -Can’t feel anything.

“The men tell each other to have courage” does not quite fill the line for “emotionally numb” as though they are probably feeling a sense of dread. Trying to encourage each other for the future.
