Describe the counterpoints that Raleigh’s Nymph makes in his poem “The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd” to Marlowe’s Shepherd in “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love.” Analyze and explain an idea or concept from the material. Your answer should be at least one hundred words.
On his poem, the Shepherd offers the Nymph a lot of things to try and convince her to love him and live together. The response of the Nymph is to tell him that everything he offers is just temporary and she is timeless, so she won't fall in love with him because it wouldn't work out.
On Raleight's poem, there's a part that says:
Thy gowns, thy shoes, thy beds of roses,
Thy cap, thy kirtle and thy posies,
Soon break, soon wither, soon forgotten
In folly ripe, in reason rotten
Here, the Nymph describes how with the passing of time all the gifts he offers to her become broken, rotten and/or forgotten. I think the Nymph rejects him badly but in the end, the Shepherd would be happier with a woman who is mortal like he is, and shares his view of love and life.
Answer:
By communicating in creative detail the thinking behind her dismissals, stanza-by-stanza, the speaker inside the ballad, a youthful female sprite, reacts to the shepherd's vision of their "cheerfully ever-after." The fairy, having predominant reasonability, coolly protests the shepherd's contributions and discloses to him that all he proposes is of the restricted time allotment of a human being; his contributions won't last.

The correct sentence among the options given is C. It correctly follows the subject-verb agreement rule for compound subjects connected with 'neither/nor'. Rewriting can improve awkward sentences to make them clearer and more direct.
Among the given options, sentence C is written correctly in terms of subject-verb agreement. The sentence 'Neither her aunts nor Wendy make the cupcakes for the class picnic.' is correctly formed because when using either/or or neither/nor constructions, the verb should agree with the subject closest to it. In this case, 'Wendy' is singular, so the plural form of the verb 'make' is used. However, it is advised to rewrite awkward sentences like this for clarity.
A better version could be: 'Either Wendy or her aunts are making the cupcakes for the class picnic.' This rewritten sentence sounds less awkward and maintains correct subject-verb agreement.
As for sentence structure and logic, we can apply a similar principle to compound subjects joined by 'and' or 'or'. For example, 'Either both Bob and Karen are washing the dishes or Sally and Tom are.' Here, the verb 'are' is used because 'Bob and Karen' is a compound subject that is treated as plural, but if one part of a compound subject is singular and the other plural, the verb should agree with the part closest to it.
What is the lead in the news story? Timothy Mathers, age 11, could well become the Boy Wonder of Los Angeles, having defeated seasoned adults at the Annual State Chess Tournament yesterday. The annual competition held in the county hall erupted into wild applause as Timothy beat Arnold Tanton (age 35), a hat-trick winner, within 35 minutes. Photographers went crazy the moment the boy checkmated his shocked opponent. Although Tanton was a seasoned player, he took his defeat sportingly, grabbing the boy’s hand in a warm gesture of congratulation. He is sure to remember this game for a long time in his career. Michela Mathers, Timothy’s mother, is ecstatic and is considering how to prepare him for greater challenges in what, until yesterday, was only a hobby for the 11-year-old.
Answer:
Timothy Mathers, age 11, could well become the Boy Wonder of Los Angeles, having defeated seasoned adults at the Annual State Chess Tournament yesterday.
Explanation:
This part is the lead of the story trust me.
The lead in a news story is the opening paragraph that provides the most essential information. For Timothy Mathers' story, it would highlight his age and his impressive defeat of seasoned chess players, focusing on the most newsworthy elements of the event.
Explanation:Understanding the Lead in a News Story
The lead in a news story is designed to give readers the most important information right at the beginning and to hook their interest. It often includes the who, what, where, when, and why of the story. In the case of Timothy Mathers, the lead of the story would focus on the fact that an 11-year-old boy has remarkably defeated seasoned adults at the Annual State Chess Tournament, thereby becoming a noteworthy figure in Los Angeles. Timothy's victory over a previously three-time winning opponent within a brief timespan and the response of the crowd and his opponent are elements that highlight the unexpected nature and the significance of his achievement.
For example, the lead might read something like: 'Timothy Mathers, an 11-year-old chess prodigy from Los Angeles, astounded onlookers by defeating seasoned champion Arnold Tanton at the Annual State Chess Tournament yesterday, signaling his rise as the new Boy Wonder of chess.'
Details about Timothy's future challenges, his mother's reaction, and the sportsmanship displayed by Arnold Tanton supplement the lead, but are not part of the lead itself. The lead's primary focus is to grab attention with the most compelling aspect of Timothy's story: his young age and remarkable victory.
What is the theme of a text?
The theme of a text is its central message or idea, often implied through elements like imagery, symbols, and character development rather than explicitly stated. To identify a theme, consider the author's intentions, character progression, and recurring patterns within the text.
The theme of a text is the underlying message, idea, or point that is central to the story and is often summed up in a single word or phrase, such as 'friendship', 'bravery', or 'the quest for identity'. Although a story may have multiple themes, they tend to explore universal or recognizable ideas and provide commentary on the human condition, societal norms, or life's ethical questions. To ascertain a text's theme, analysis may focus on recurring imagery, symbols, or motifs, examine relationships between plot, setting, characters, and overall structure, as well as the evocation of feelings throughout the narrative.
A theme is not explicitly stated but is instead implied through various elements of the text. For example, in Gwendolyn Brooks's poem 'We Real Cool', the theme can be interpreted as the significance of companionship and the struggle for individual identity among teenagers, which is expressed through the repeated usage of 'We' at the end of each line. In performing a textual analysis, considering changes in characters, plot developments, and posed problems or ideas can lead to a deeper understanding of the text's central themes.
Examples of questions to ask oneself when trying to identify the theme include: What is the author trying to convey? How do the characters evolve throughout the story? What are the recurring patterns or language in the text? By answering these questions, one can formulate a thesis that captures the essence of the text's theme.

Explanation:
The complex sentence is option B) As she was unable to swim, Lena didn't want to go to the pool party, but Jasmin convinced her to go.

The single commandment 'Thou shalt not make any graven images' may be seen as ridiculous by some because it forbids the creation of any visual representation of God or any other object of worship.
Explanation:The single commandment 'Thou shalt not make any graven images' may be seen as ridiculous by some because it forbids the creation of any visual representation of God or any other object of worship. This prohibition can be seen as challenging in a world where visual symbols and images are commonly used to represent religious beliefs.
This commandment was given by Moses to the Israelites and is one of the Ten Commandments mentioned in the Bible. The purpose behind this commandment was to discourage idol worship and emphasize the worship of the one true God.
However, it may be considered unreasonable by some because it restricts the use of art and visual representations as tools for religious expression and worship.

Write a 250-word essay in which you explain the relationship between the speaker and the mother in the poem. Be sure to cite examples from the text in your response.
The speaker in "The Courage My Mother Had", had a strong relationship with her mother. One way this is shown is the title itself. And also the whole poem the speaker is talking about how she misses her mother and how great and courageous she was. If the speaker and their mother were not close and did not have a strong bond then the speaker probably never would have written this poem.
In Gwendolyn Brooks's poem 'We Real Cool', the relationship between the speaker and the mother is one of tension, representing youth rebellion and parental authority. The speaker, a young pool player, challenges societal expectations while recognizing their vulnerability in the face of societal disapproval, embodied in the mother figure. Thus, the poem offers a nuanced exploration of relationships in literature.
Explanation:In the poem 'We Real Cool' by Gwendolyn Brooks, the relationship between the speaker and the mother is complex and layered, suggestive of a deep understanding of human relationships that Brooks is renowned for. The relationship is one of tension, suggesting an exploration of youth rebellion and parental authority. The speaker of the poem, presumably a member of the group of pool players, demonstrates an adolescent defiance against the constraints of society, represented here by the mother figure.
Their decision to stay out late and play pool is a direct challenge to authority and the conventional expectations of society. Yet within this rebellion, there is an underlying recognition of their vulnerability. This is hinted at in the use of words like 'we lurk late' and 'we jazz June' which show a hint of mischief and indulgence, yet with an undertone of apprehension. They are acutely aware of the disapproval they attract from society, embodied in the mother figure.
Therefore, the relationship between the speaker and the mother in Gwendolyn Brooks's poem 'We Real Cool' is fraught with tension, emblematic of the struggle between youthful defiance and societal norms. The text is thus a case study in successfully analyzing and interpreting relationships in literature.

Based on the historical background provided, which two claims in this excerpt from Franklin D. Roosevelt’s "Four Freedoms" speech, given in 1941, can be considered inconsistent with US policy?
Two inconsistencies in US policy with FDR's 'Four Freedoms' speech were the lack of comprehensive social welfare to address freedom from want, and the failure to protect personal security, as seen in the internment of Japanese Americans, compromising freedom from fear.
Two claims in Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms" speech that can be considered inconsistent with US policy at the time are freedom from want and freedom from fear. While these freedoms were promoted by Roosevelt as ideals that the United States should support, they were not fully realized within the nation's policies during that era. The United States did not have universal social welfare programs to prevent extreme poverty (freedom from want), nor did it completely protect against threats to personal security (freedom from fear), especially considering the racial discrimination and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

The story from Theodor Taylor, "The Cay" is a novel against prejudice, theres a strong massage againts racism. This is reinforced not only with the story itself but with the dedication he writes for M.L King.
The characters in this novel are:
1) Phillip Enright an 11-year-old who is the protagonist and narrator of the story. He is abandoned on a cay in "The Devil's Mouth". He is injured when his shiped get torpedoed and because of that injured goes blind and stablish a relationship with Timothy, a black man. When the day go theough he becomes to enjoy his company and appreciate building up a close relationship based on trust and care.
2) Timothy is a West Indian native of Charlotte Amalie in Saint Thomas. He is , is marooned with Phillip on the island and takes good care of him teaching him to live without his sight and be self-sufficient.
3) Stew Cat is the Phillip´s and Timothy´s cat. Their feline friend on the cay, especially closed to Phillip. Before the ship is beaten he was the cook´s cat.
4) Grace is Phillip's Mother she goes on the ship with Phillip but when it get beaten she drown with it.
5) Mr. Phillip Enright is Phillips father he works in an oil refinery and moves his family to the Dutch West Indies.
6) Henrik van Boven is Phillip's friend in Curaçao, original from the Dutch Island and is against Grace prejudice and racism against black people.
The story is about relationships and the way their are built and reinforced daily. It´s about how prejudice can be knoked down and strong friendship can be born in its place when you don´t took people for granted. For example, at the begging of the story Phillip, maybe caring his mothers preconcepcion on black people, had a negative idea about Tymothy:
“He crawled over toward me. His face couldn't have been blacker, or his teeth whiter. They made an alabaster trench in his mouth, and his pink-purple lips peeled back over them like the meat of a conch shell. He had a big welt, like a scar, on his left cheek. I knew he was West Indian. I had seen many of them in Willemstad, but he was the biggest one I'd ever seen.”
But thorugh out the time passed they relation ship became closer and Phillip begun to accept Tymothy more naturally and his thoghts also were different: “I moved close to Timothy's big body before I went to sleep. I remember smiling in the darkness. He felt neither white nor black.“
Finally but not leats, about the Quote: “To Dr. King’s dream, which can only come true if the very young know and understand.” It might be because they have to experience and loose themselves on new relationships, leaving prejudice aside to expierience their own reality and build up their own ideas.
