THE MATCH

There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.

Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.

In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

Answer 1
1. The purpose of the line "In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match..." is to imply the main idea of the article. The statement that we can easily kindle fire today implies that there was a time when it wasn't so easy. That is why people had to figure out a way to kindle a fire without looking for a natural source. All of this supports the article's main idea, that match was a brilliant invention, which we shouldn't take for granted.

2. This line shows the need for matches. People had troubles with finding the fire, but it got even harder because any fire can easily get extinguished. This proves there was an urgent need to find a way to kindle fire without having to resort to nature at all times. The line doesn't show how dependable nature is - on the contrary, it shows that humans had to find a way to not depend on it. It doesn't show how people got the fire, or how long it took to make matches.

3. The correct answer is thesaurus. It is not an encyclopedia or an ordinary dictionary, but a dictionary of synonyms, that is words with similar meanings. It also contains antonyms (words with opposite meanings) and words with related meanings. When we don't know what a word means, we use a dictionary or an encyclopedia (or Wikipedia, for that matter). However, when we know its meaning, but are looking for a more appropriate word, we use a thesaurus.

verbal irony  (D)

Explanation:

Figurative language is s the use of the language in any way that is not firmly literal. There are at least six distinct categories. They are metaphors, similes, personification, hyperbole, and symbolism, and irony.

In the excerpt above, there are two of them, hyperbole and verbal Irony. The example for the hyperbole is this: “with all the force in his body”. The meaning of the sentence is an exaggeration, if you literally used all the force in your body, you would not resist, so we should not take it as what it literally means. The example for the verbal irony is: “an opportunity to reward me” the actioner was going to do exactly the opposite of what was said, he was going to punish the man, and that is certainly the irony, the use of the opposite of any word that should be used.

What is significant about Lomov and Natalya's disagreement about Oxen Meadows? A. Chekhov is establishing Lomov and Natalya as wealthy land owners. B. Chekhov is revealing the similarities in Lomov and Natalya's characterizations. C. Chekhov is developing the universal theme of conflict. D. Chekhov is making a statement about the practice of marrying for land rather than love.

Answers

The correct answer is B. This is a farce that satirizes marriage, by depicting a scene of a marriage proposal where everything is at stake except for the marriage itself. Both Lomov and Natalya are parts of this social milieu and both of them have their say in it.
The correct answer isn't D, because Lomov and Natalya start their quarrel before she even finds out that he came to propose to her. Also, the correct answer isn't A; whereas Lomov and Natalya are members of the upper class of landowners, this is not the point of the scene. It is not even C, because Chekhov's universal theme is not a mere land dispute, but the problems in the very concept of marriage.
Final answer:

The significant aspect of Lomov and Natalya's disagreement about Oxen Meadows is Chekhov's critique on the practice of marrying for land rather than love, showcasing societal values of the time.

Explanation:

The disagreement about Oxen Meadows between Lomov and Natalya in Chekhov's play is significant for several reasons. However, the most fitting interpretation, given the context of Chekhov's work and the dynamics between the characters, aligns with option D; Chekhov is making a statement about the practice of marrying for land rather than love. The dispute, seemingly trivial, escalates to ridiculous proportions, highlighting not just the similarities in Lomov and Natalya's stubborn and argumentative natures, but more critically, it serves as a satirical critique of the mercenary motives behind marriages among the landed gentry of the time. This discussion transcends the literal argument over property rights to underscore a deeper, societal critique on the values of the time, where land and status often trumped personal feelings in matrimonial matters.

Answers

1. Perseus beheaded the Golden Medusa
2. He saved Andromeda from Cetus, the sea monster
3. Andromeda's uncle ploted to kill Perseus, but Perseus defeated him (using the Medusa's head).

Please mark as brainliest I dont normally say this.BUT IM DESPERATE

The correct answer to this open question is the following.

The three perilous  encounters the Perseus experienced during his adventure are:

Perseus cuts Medusas' head. Probably is one of the most exciting and dangerous moments because Perseus knew that if he sees Medusa directly in the eyes, he could have turn into a rock.

Another dangerous moment is when Perseus saves Andromeda from the terrible monster Cetus, a monster that lived in the sea. Perseus had to use all of his talents to defeat the monster and rescue Andromeda.

And the third dangerous moment is when Perseus killed Andromeda's uncle, that had plotted to kill him.

To keep himself alive during those encounters, Perseus had to use all of his talents and tools such as the curved sword, the Helmet of invisibility, and the Winged shoes.

Mrs. Mallard’s initial reaction to her husband’s death is grief. What is the first indication to the reader that Mrs. Mallard has a change of heart about her husband’s death?

Answers

She goes to her room and wants to be left alone. Just when the reader thinks that she will further indulge in her grief, she gazes through the window and whispers "Free, free, free!"

It is hard to say that Mrs. Mallard is heartless, or that she didn't love her husband at all, or that he had treated her badly. None of this is true, as far as the reader can see in this short story. The point is deeper than that. Mrs. Mallard feels freedom from marital restraints for the first time. This is what she enjoys so much. This is the first thing that comes to her mind the moment she is no longer surrounded with other people. When no one's watching her, she can give way to her real feelings - not because she is a hypocrite, but because it is hard if not impossible to stay true to oneself (and open about it) in a small community.

The correct answer is; she whispers, "free, free, free!"

The owner of a landscaping company wants to attract more business from people in the area. Which type of writing would not be appropriate for this audience and purpose? a technical how-to manual on landscaping a television commercial discussing the company and showing examples of landscaped property flyers listing the benefits of hiring the company a newspaper advertisement giving reasons customers would benefit from hiring his company

Answers

The correct answer is a a technical, how-to manual on landscaping. This sort of manual would not be appropriate to attract local business. People who need to hire landscapers are, by definition, those without any technical expertise in the area. Thus, this type of writing would be of no benefit to them, and it would not introduce them to the landscaping business.

According to Jefferson, what, in general, do the colonists object to about the way laws are made and enforced in the colonies?

Answers

Final answer:

The colonists objected to British laws regarding taxation without representation, interference with trade, and the denial of the right to trial by jury and self-governance.

Explanation:

According to Thomas Jefferson, the colonists had several major objections to how laws were made and enforced by the British in the American colonies. The core issues centered on taxation without representation, interference in trade, denial of trial by jury, and infringement upon the right to self-government. The concept of 'virtual representation' offered by the British was deemed unacceptable by the colonists, who insisted that only elected representatives could levy taxes. Moreover, arbitrary quartering of British troops in colonist homes, especially through the Quartering Act, and oppressive enforcement of laws by Vice-Admiralty courts, which lacked juries and shifted the burden of proof onto the accused, were seen as violations of the rights of British citizens.

One of Jefferson's crucial contentions was that the King had obstructed justice by refusing to assent to laws that would establish a fair judiciary system, providing additional evidence of the Crown's disregard for colonial self-governance.

The colonists felt that they were entitled to all the liberties afforded to them under the English Bill of Rights and that they were free to protest policies and laws that violated their British citizenship rights. This stance fueled the colonial resistance and the eventual decision to declare independence and form a new government that would respect the principles of representation, justice, and self-rule.

Northfield is a model city in Westport County. Crime rates have dropped 28% in the last five years, and new business development has increased by 42% over the same period. There also has been significant growth in public services with the opening of our new Northfield Community Center and the current construction of Northfield Park. Unfortunately, Proposition S now threatens to undo all that Northfield has accomplished in recent years. Proposition S intends to fund public services throughout Westport County by taking 8.25% of all tax revenues away from city governments. Although most people believe that more public services are needed, Proposition S would only burden Northfield and other cities with strong local governments and business-friendly policies. These city governments would be required to pay for public services in areas where local politicians have failed to find a way to fund their own projects. Given the strength of Northfields economy, approximately $12.3 million dollars of tax revenue would be redirected toward county projects. Without this money in Northfields budget, many programs at our new community center will have to be cut. This would affect more than 40,000 citizens of Northfield, as well as 25,000 people who live outside our city and use the community center on a regular basis. The construction of Northfield Park, which also would be open to all county residents, would probably have to be put on hold.
