The results showed that in frightening situations, the infant monkeys overwhelmingly preferred and sought comfort with the terry-cloth surrogate mother, which provided them with comfort but no food, over the wire surrogate mother which could dispense milk.
This preference highlighted the significance of emotional and physical comfort, coined as "contact comfort", in forming strong infant-caregiver bonds, challenging the prevailing belief that attachment was primarily based on the provision of nourishment.
