If a gasket surface is too smooth, it
A. will allow the cylinder to function at too fast a rate.
B. won't be able to seal the deep grooves in the surface.
C. can move out of proper location, causing leakage.
D. has too high a microinch finish.

Answers

Answer:

Among the options given on the question the correct answer is option C.

can move out of proper location , causing leakage.

Explanation: A gasket is a mechanical seal or lock which is used for filling the space between two or more mating surfaces to prevent the leakage or to prevent the mixing of the components under the compression.

They are commonly produced by cutting sheet materials.  They allow for almost perfect mating surfaces on machine parts to fill the irregularities.

However the surface of a gasket is very important to determine. Because the surface can not be too smooth or too rough. If the surface is too smooth than it can be slippery and will not have proper grip. As a result it can move out from the proper location.

As a result there will be leakage which hamper the machine parts.

On the other hand if the surface is too rough it will be hard for the gasket to conform to surface imperfection and also may have leakage.

How should the writer revise sentence 4?

by replacing the word “argue” with the word “fight”
by deleting the entire sentence from the paragraph
by changing “aren’t” to “are not” and “they’re” to “they are”
by moving the sentence to the end of the paragraph

Answers

I would have to say that the best way to revise sentence four is by changing "aren't" and "they're" to "are not" and "they are."

"Argue" works better than "fight."

Deleting the entire sentence would remove the transition into cost efficiency of the tablets.

And moving the sentence to the end would place the transition to cost efficiency in the wrong place.

by changing “aren’t” to “are not” and “they’re” to “they are”

Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed...at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

What is the counterclaim of this argument?

A voluntour experience is a necessary addition to an individual's college resume.
The cost of voluntouring is minor in light of what one gets out of the experience.
There are better ways to make a difference than mixing tourism with volunteering.
Voluntourism is a worthwhile way to make a difference and travel the world.

Answers

Answer:

The correct answer is "Voluntourism is a worthwhile way to make a difference and travel the world.

Explanation: The claim throughout the article is that while those who "voluntour" think they are making a difference by their efforts, there are a wealth of problems that occur because of their presence. The essence of the article (or claim) is that "voluntourism" is not really a good thing. Thus, the counterclaim is the choice listed.

Answer:

C. "Father's eyes were narrow slits of blue fire in his white face."

Explanation:

The figure of speech used in the sentence claimed that his eyes were narrow slits of blue fire. Of course, this isn't possible. It is meant to convey the message that Father is angry, hence his eyes being 'narrow slits of blue fire'.

Hope that helped!

Final answer:

The passage that contains a figure of speech from 'The Strangers That Came to Town' is C, which uses a metaphor to describe the father's eyes as 'narrow slits of blue fire in his white face.'

Explanation:

The question asks which passage from The Strangers That Came to Town includes a figure of speech. Among the provided options, the answer is C. father's eyes were narrow slits of blue fire in his white face. This sentence uses a metaphor, a type of figure of speech, by comparing father's eyes to blue fire without using like or as, to convey the intensity and possibly the emotion in his eyes vividly. It emphasizes the father's strong emotions or intensity of gaze through the imaginative comparison to 'blue fire', which is not meant to be taken literally, hence qualifying as a figure of speech.

The figure of speech in the passage from 'The Strangers That Came to Town' is in option C: father's eyes were narrow slits of blue fire in his white face. This sentence uses a simile, comparing the father's eyes to slits of blue fire, which is not meant to be taken literally.

In “ Dover Beach” by Matthew Arnold, how does place affect theme?

Answers

The isolation of the setting contributes to a feeling of isolation. Thank you for your time!

~Esther

Final answer:

In 'Dover Beach' by Matthew Arnold, the setting of the beach is a central element that shapes the poem's themes, using the contrast between the initial calm and the relentless waves to reflect on the human condition and existential struggles.

Explanation:

In “Dover Beach” by Matthew Arnold, place affects theme profoundly. The poem begins with a peaceful description of the calm sea at Dover Beach, which sets an initial tone of tranquility. However, as the poem progresses, this serenity is contrasted with the themes of human misery and the lack of faith. Arnold uses the setting of Dover Beach as a metaphor for the human condition and the ebb and flow of faith throughout human history. The calm sea reflects an illusion of peace that is challenged by the reality of the relentless waves that symbolize the persistent struggles of life. The physical setting of the beach, therefore, underlines the poem's exploration of existential themes, such as isolation and the search for meaning in an indifferent universe.

how might a text written in limited third person point of view affect a reader?

Answers

Hello There!

The reader may not get the perspectives of the other characters.

Because the text is in third person limited, it would only show the perspective of a single character. However, if it were third person omniscient, all character's perspectives would be shown.

How is the text structured in this passage from the
prologue?
It has a chronological structure because it shows
the evolution of different sweeteners over time.
A rock drawing in Spain from about 7000 B.C. shows a
man who has climbed a hillside, found a crevice holding a
hive, and is reaching in to grab the honey. Indeed, a lucky
wanderer in just about any part of Europe, Africa, or Asia
that wasn't covered with ice could stumble on a hive and
-at the risk of some stings-come away with a treat.
(People in the Americas had no bees, so used syrups
made from maple trees, agave cactus, or mashed fruits
for their sweeteners.) Then someone figured out that you
didn't have to be lucky. You could hollow out a log near
bees, and they would make it their home. You could
"keep" bees--you didn't have to find them.
-Sugar Changed the World,
Marc Aronson and Marina Budhos
.
It has a cause-and-effect structure because it
shows how a rock drawing led to the use of
sweeteners
It has a compare-and-contrast structure because it
describes similarities and differences between
different sweeteners.
It has a problem-and-solution structure because it
shows how ancient people solved the dilemma of
finding sweeteners

In The Kite Runner, one reason why Baba is so hard on Amir is that _____.

Baba feels guilty about fathering Hassan
Baba was once a champion kite flyer
Baba is a naturally mean and unloved man
Baba wanted his son to be illiterate

Answers

Answer:

because he feel guilty about fathering.

Explanation:

Baba feels as if he has failed in creating a "perfect" son - a son who is exactly like he was. Amir is the complete opposite of Baba in his childhood: Amir didn't do anything physical, he didn't stand up for anything, he was weak and cowardly. This shames Baba.

Final answer:

Baba is tough on Amir because he feels guilty for fathering Hassan, which complicates their familial relationship.

Explanation:

In The Kite Runner, one reason why Baba is so hard on Amir is that Baba feels guilty about fathering Hassan. Baba's guilt stems from the fact that he had an affair with Hassan's mother, resulting in Hassan's birth. However, Baba never publicly acknowledges Hassan as his son, leading to a strained relationship with Amir and making him even more critical of him. Baba's harshness can be seen as a manifestation of his internal conflict and guilt over his past actions. This is a complex emotional situation that influences his behavior towards his legitimate son, Amir.
