Why do some regions of ny have colder climates than other regions

Answers

Answer 1

This pattern of a uniquely cold Northeast has held throughout the last two winters.  The Eastern United States has been experiencing much colder weather than average, while the rest of the world has been experiencing hotter than normal conditions.  While NOAA determined 2014 to be the hottest year on record globally, the Eastern United States stands out as a cold spot in a hot world.

So what is going on here in the East?  While ‘global warming’ is clear in the map of temperature records across the globe, overall ‘climate change’ is more subtle.  Some regions may experience more warming than others and some locations might even experience cooling for a while, while the overall globe warms.

The Eastern U.S. was one of the few regions on the planet that saw colder than average temperatures in 2014. Source: NOAA.

Such differential effects can result if the total global temperature rise actually changes the patterns of atmospheric circulation and ocean temperatures and currents.  Is that what is happening here? Are the last couple of cold winters in Eastern North America actually a feature of the overall warming, driven by changes in atmospheric circulation?

Many in the Northeast would like to know, because that would tell us if we should expect more winters like these in the decades ahead. But the answer is not yet clear.

Some climate scientists have hypothesized that the warming Arctic and the loss of Arctic sea ice lasting through the summer is changing the behavior of the jet stream in a way that contributes to both the heat waves and drought in the western half of the North America and the Arctic break-outs of cold air afflicting the eastern half (Overland, Nature Climate Change, 2014, Vol 4, p.11-12).  This is still a very controversial issue, however, and other climate scientists think that these regional patterns are just normal annual variation, albeit against a background of overall warming.

The question of how climate change is changing the likelihood of these interconnected regional weather contrasts is an extremely active field where more is known every day, but a definite answer on whether this Eastern cold spell is directly related to climate change is not yet known for certain.

What was the main reason the middle kingdom ended?

Answers

The middle kingdom came to a very sudden end. The Hyksos invaded and took over, and the last Egyptian ruler did not put enough effort into defense of the empire.

The main reason for the end of the Middle Kingdom of Egypt was the invasion of the Hyksos, external rulers of Canaanite or West Asian origin. This invasion, coupled with internal weaknesses and potential environmental factors, led to the decline and fragmentation of the Middle Kingdom, marking its end.

The Middle Kingdom of Egypt, a period in ancient Egyptian history that lasted from approximately 2050 BCE to 1710 BCE, came to an end primarily due to a combination of external and internal factors:Hyksos Invasion: The primary external factor was the invasion of the Hyksos, a group of foreign rulers believed to be of Canaanite or West Asian origin. They invaded Egypt, likely taking advantage of political instability and exploiting Egypt's weakened state.Internal Weakness: Prior to the Hyksos invasion, the Middle Kingdom saw periods of political fragmentation and instability. Weak central authority and regional governors known as nomarchs weakened the unity of Egypt.Natural Disasters: Some historians suggest that environmental factors, such as a prolonged drought, may have contributed to the decline of the Middle Kingdom. A scarcity of resources could have exacerbated social and political tensions. The combined effects of external invasion, internal divisions, and possible environmental challenges led to the decline of the Middle Kingdom. Eventually, the Hyksos ruled over parts of Egypt, marking the end of this period.

. If citizens did not pay taxes, which of the following might occur?

Schools might close down because they run out of money.

The government might have to pass stricter laws for businesses.

Companies might not be able to hire new employees.

Everyone might have to serve on juries for a week rather than a day.

Answers

Schools would close down because a good portion of our taxes goes to funding schools and paying the teachers.

The government runs on our taxes therefore there would be no government to begin with.

On the contrary, companies will be able to hire more employees because they keep all the money (since they don't pay taxes) and therefore they continue to flourish.

Lastly, no, it doesn't work like that.

Why was it difficult to maintain the crusade kingdoms

Answers

Politics. To defend a territory you need a state. Europe was not a state, neither was a viable one the kingdom of Jerusalem.
Final answer:

Maintaining the Crusader Kingdoms was difficult due to internal conflicts among European aristocrats, the failure to maintain strong alliances, the confusion and subsequent military coordination among Muslims, the challenges of long-distance administration, and a constant shortage of settlers and soldiers from Europe.

Explanation:

Difficulties in Maintaining the Crusader Kingdoms

The Crusader Kingdoms, established during the period of the Crusades from 1096 to 1291, faced numerous challenges to their stability and longevity. The Crusaders often alienated potential allies such as the Byzantine Empire by not returning cities or lands as promised. Moreover, the European aristocrats' thirst for individual power often led to internal conflicts, weakening the Crusader States against a common enemy. The Muslim response, although initially confused, became more coordinated and potent over time, as exemplified by leaders like Imad al-Din Zengi who recaptured Edessa, signaling the vulnerability of the crusaders' position.

Additionally, the long distances from Europe made it difficult to maintain a robust flow of settlers or soldiers to Outremer, necessitating the establishment of crusading orders and formidable fortresses like Krak des Chevaliers. Despite the economic and social integration to some extent, including the use of existing tax systems by Christian landlords and the continuity of Islamic and Jewish institutions, the Crusader States faced a shortage of manpower and a hostile surrounding population imbued with religious and cultural differences. This reality, compounded by competing priorities and political dynamics within Europe, made sustaining the Crusades overly onerous. As such, the crusading movement eventually waned, with other geopolitical factors, including the rise of nation-states, drawing more attention and resources away from the Holy Land.

How has the study of natural history changed over time

Answers

Final answer:

Natural history has evolved from static, unchanging views to a complex interdisciplinary study incorporating evolutionary theory and the deep time perspective. Early naturalists like Robert Hooke challenged traditional views, and the introduction of evolutionary ideas in the eighteenth century led to the modern understanding of Earth's dynamic processes. Continuous advancements in science have refined the study of natural history, providing insights into how nature shapes humanity.

Explanation:

The study of natural history has undergone significant changes over time, with early views often being static and unchanging. As scientific thought evolved, figures like Robert Hooke and naturalists in the eighteenth century began to challenge these views, suggesting that nature has undergone change throughout the ages. The discovery of fossils far from oceans and on mountaintops led to an understanding of Earth's dynamic geography, while ideas on evolution and extinction of species emerged. James Hutton's theory of gradual geological change and Charles Lyell's ideas further paved the way for understanding Earth's deep time. The acceptance of the greater age of Earth provided the context needed for the theory of evolution by natural selection, later solidified by Charles Darwin's work. Today, the analysis of the fossil record and archaeological findings continue to refine our understanding of natural history, using both empirical evidence and educated speculation.

Scientific advancements and the continuous reinterpretation of evidence, aided by technology and better methodologies, have allowed for more accurate reconstructions of prehistoric life. In recent times, conservation efforts have led to the collection of specimens, aiding zooarchaeologists and archaeobotanists in comparative analyses. Simultaneously, the studies of archaeologists, anthropologists, genetic scientists, and historians contribute to a more nuanced understanding of how nature shapes humanity, with significant implications for biological and cultural adaptations. The field of natural history, with its interdisciplinary approach, continues to illuminate our past and influence our future.

Final answer:

The study of natural history has evolved from a static view of nature to a dynamic understanding of evolution and geological change. Key figures in this evolution include Buffon, Hutton, and Darwin, with the latter's theory of evolution by natural selection being a turning point.

Explanation:

The study of natural history has undergone significant transformations over time, evolving with scientific breakthroughs and the changing perspectives of humanity on nature and ourselves. Notably, the understanding of how nature shapes humanity has been heavily influenced by the work of anthropologists and naturalists. Early views, influenced by figures such as Aristotle, held that nature was static, but this belief was challenged over centuries, leading to the realization that Earth and its living inhabitants have undergone constant change.

In the eighteenth century, naturalists like Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, and James Hutton proposed that species evolve and that geological changes occur gradually over time, concepts that contrasted with the catastrophic events model of Earth's history. The most significant leap in understanding came from Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, which provided a scientific basis for species change over time.

Where is a person tried when they are accused of a federal crime

Answers

Final answer:

A person accused of a federal crime is tried in federal court and has the right to a trial by jury.

Explanation:

A person accused of a federal crime is tried in federal court. According to the Fifth Amendment, a person can be tried in federal court for a felony, such as a serious crime, after a grand jury issues an indictment.

It is important to note that the trial of all crimes, except in cases of impeachment, shall be by jury, as stated in the Constitution. This means that the person accused will have the right to a trial by a jury of their peers.

An individual found not guilty of all charges will be released, while someone found guilty of one or more offenses will receive a sentence determined by the judge based on guidelines.

Final answer:

A person accused of a federal crime is tried in a federal court, often after indictment by a grand jury. Trials by jury are mandated by the Constitution for federal crimes committed within a state, while Congress may direct the location if outside a state. The federal sentencing guidelines usually affect the sentence following a guilty verdict.

Explanation:

When a person is accused of a federal crime, they are tried in a federal court. According to the Fifth Amendment and the Supreme Court's interpretation, the grand jury process ensures that a person facing serious charges, such as a felony, will be indicted if there's sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. For non-federal crimes, states must use a process of indictment that is equally fair as the federal system, even if it is not a grand jury.

Federal crimes are those that violate federal law, and the trials for these crimes occur at the federal level rather than at the state or local levels. This distinction is important, as it also relates to the concept of double jeopardy, where a person cannot be tried twice for the same crime at the same level of government; however, a federal trial may proceed after a state trial if federal laws were also violated.

The Constitution stipulates that the trial of all crimes, except in cases of impeachment, should be by jury (Section 2 Clause 3). This includes federal crimes, where the trial should be held in the state where the crime was committed unless otherwise directed by Congress, as trial by jury is seen as a fundamental right within the judicial system.

If the crime was not committed within any state, Congress has the authority to determine the trial location. The federal sentencing guidelines typically influence the sentencing phase if the defendant is found guilty, which assigns point values to various offenses and facts in the case.
